Dapsone: Comprehensive Evidence-Based Product Monograph

Overview and Clinical Significance Dapsone, chemically known as 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), represents one of those fascinating compounds that started its life in the dye industry before finding its true calling in medicine. First synthesized in 1908 by Fromm and Wittmann, it took several decades before researchers recognized its antimicrobial properties. Today, dapsone serves as both a critical antibiotic for leprosy and an anti-inflammatory agent for various dermatological conditions. The drug occupies a unique position in modern pharmacotherapy—it’s simultaneously ancient by pharmaceutical standards yet remains irreplaceable for specific indications.
